SONORA CUSTOM

HIGH-GAIN MOSFET DRIVE

Everything great about the Sonora, turned up to 11.

When we sent the original Sonora out with our friend Rich from Latecomer, he had one small request: more of everything.

Which got us thinking: many companies separate rather similar high-gain and mid-gain overdrives, because they hope they can sell you two pedals instead of one. But what if… no? Why not have every beautiful and brutal sound in one device?

The Custom has the same structure as the standard Sonora, but with a larger input capacitor, 50% more treble range on both the Tone (low-pass) and Range (high-pass) controls, and double the gain. The larger input cap allows more low/midrange into the gain stage while the extended treble ranges can give a razor sharp edge to single-coils and a welcome presence to humbuckers. The crushing 63dB of maximum gain means the Custom can saturate the clipping diodes straight to whatever hell you believe in, wandering into full-on fuzz territory as you turn the gain knob past noon. Oh, and we put convenient indicators around each knob that show the original Sonora’s maximum settings to help you dial in your perfect gain and tone. From midrange-heavy bluesy breakup to obliterating distortion, the Sonora Custom has something for every playing style.

Special options only available on the Custom!!!

  • Available in a range of colors - matte, glossy, and sparkle. Since each is built to order, let us know what color you’d like and we’ll see how close we can get. Rich’s version (pictured) is Kelly green - the “default” color is sparkle indigo.

  • You can pick from a variety of diode options for the hard-clipping setting and change them out on your own later with no soldering. LED’s for an open & bluesier sound, silicon or MOSFET’s for a modern & semi-compressed sound, or Schottky diodes for a hyper-compressed grind. Or, for an extra fee*, we can source rare NOS germanium diodes for a particularly tight and smooth distortion heard on some of the most famous overdrives in history. Default is an asymmetrical pairing of an infrared LED and a MOSFET, same as the standard Sonora.

  • There are no modifications available for the soft-clipping circuit, because it sounds amazing and you will almost certainly like it. Well, maybe if you ask nicely… it is called Custom, after all.

SOUND SAMPLES

Because the Sonora Custom only differs from the Sonora with Tone above 70%, Range above 70%, and/or gain above 50%, these samples are all in these ranges. Check out the standard Sonora page for less extreme settings accessable on both pedals!
